I have played many games on this machine to test its capabilities. One game I want to talk about is Dragon Age: Inquisition by EA Games. You may have heard about how good this game looks and the intense settings they recommend playing it at. So I fired up DA: I on high settings, 8x MSAA anti-aliasing, 16X anisotropic filtering, 4K resolution(Yes, real 4K), normal texture quality, and medium shadow quality.
The result: My laptop crashes at the first cutscene😔. The game froze at that point, and I had no choice but to restart my computer, which was halfway through installing an important security update. I fixed this issue by lowering texture quality to medium and shadow quality to high, as well as reducing the resolution to 2560×1440(Full HD). After several hours of gameplay, I can only say it should be okay for most other games out there.
Your fps will drop down somewhat if you play any of the Dragon Age series on max settings, but other than that, if you go easy on graphics, your experience may be very enjoyable. If you want a great-performing gaming laptop that isn’t an MSI, check out the razer blade (better specs but a smaller hard drive and worse sound) or the alien ware 15 (no touchscreen).

10 FAQs About MSI Gaming laptops:
What is the processor?
Answer: Most MSI Gaming laptops use the i7-4710HQ Processor, with a base frequency of 2.5GHz and turbo up to 3.4GHz(dependent on workload). The 4710hq is an upgraded version of the old 4700hq, as it offers somewhat higher boost speeds but has lower bass frequencies than its predecessor.
Is it worth $2000 for this laptop?
It depends on what you will use it for since many other gaming laptops provide better specs for about $1000 less (such as the Alienware 15, which is a much better deal). However, the MSI might suit your purposes well if you go easy on graphics and only do a little demanding gaming.
How good is the graphics card?
This varies from model to model, but usually, it’s better than most other laptops on the market with similar pricing. The GTX 880M provides great performance at 1080p resolution and can even handle some games at 4K! However, I would stay clear of the GS60 Ghost Pro models, which have SLI(dual) GTX 870m’s due to their poor thermal design leading to overheating issues.
Does it come with an SSD?
How much RAM does it have?
The standard configuration is a 4GB DDR3L 1600mhz SODIMM(4) module for a total of 16GB, but if you feel like splurging, go with two 8GB sticks to make 32 GB.
Is the cooling system good enough to handle the powerful hardware?
That depends on the model. Some MSI Gaming laptops use a standard Heatpipe cooler which isn’t as good as the high-end Hyper212+ but can still keep things cool under load at an acceptable level of noise(the GS60 Ghost Pro stays quiet even with SLI GTX 870m’s, while some other models such as the GE62 Apache and GE72 Apache deliver quite disappointing cooling performance).
Frequently Asked Questions
Did you put it under a heavy load?
Yes, I did; I played many games on this machine to test its capabilities.
The result: My laptop crashes at the first cutscene. The game froze at that point and had to be force closed. So after trying a bunch of different settings, I decided to lower texture quality to medium and shadow quality to high, as well as reduce the resolution to 2560×1440(Full HD). After several hours of gameplay, it should be okay for most other games
What about the battery life?
It depends on the model, but most gaming laptops will last around 2-3 hours with light use, which could be better if you’re often away from home during the day. (keep in mind this laptop has better specs than many others, so your results may vary)
Will an MSI Gaming Laptop heat my room/house/apartment/office with its fan noise and blowing warm air?
Yes, MSI Gaming laptops tend to be quite noisy and can get quite hot under heavy loads. If you want a good gaming laptop that stays quiet while playing games, then the Asus G73JW-A1(17″) or G74SX-910(17″) are good choices.
Is it worth getting an MSI Gaming Laptop?
For $1500-$2000, I suggest buying something else like the Alienware 15 or Asus ROG G751JT-CH71(Clevo P151SM1). The GTX 880M isn’t substantially more powerful than a GTX 780M and is difficult to find at normal pricing anyways (MSI’s website lists it for $1400 in the US, but in my experience, it has not been available at that price range in actual stores). Please find one in your budget.
Is there any game that shouldn’t be played on this laptop?
I’ve heard it runs Civ 5 poorly at medium settings, even with everything turned off, so avoid playing that game on this computer. Other than that, I have heard nothing bad about DA: I or Shadow of Mordor running on high/ultra settings with AA enabled (other than them eating your battery life), so feel free to buy this machine and play those games!
